Kicking off a Pond Window Project in Kennett, PA: A Stunning Backyard Transformation

Welcome to an exciting journey into one of the most unique pond projects we’ve ever tackled. Located in beautiful Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, this pond project combines innovation, design, and nature to create a breathtaking backyard escape. We are thrilled to share the process and details behind this incredible pond window project, which features a negative edge pond, a wooden bridge, fire bowls, and a spectacular pond window that offers a front-row seat to underwater life.

Setting the Stage: The Vision for the Pond Project in Kennett Square

This project marks the next phase of a multi-year transformation for the homeowner. Last year, we installed a swimming pool and a spring house, laying the foundation for what was to become a backyard paradise. This year, we’re adding a water feature that blends fire and water, creating a mesmerizing display. The pond will feature a negative edge, serving as both a mechanical filter and a stunning visual element. Alongside the pond, a wooden bridge will span over the water, connecting different parts of the yard and inviting exploration.

What makes this project stand out is the blend of functional engineering and artistic design. The negative edge pond isn’t just for show—it plays a crucial role in keeping the water clean and clear. We’re also incorporating fire bowls with fountains, which will shoot flames above splashing water, adding drama and warmth to the outdoor space.

Understanding the Negative Edge: The Heart of the Pond

The negative edge is the mechanical filter for the entire pond system. It’s a basin hidden behind the scenes but essential for the pond’s health and beauty. The basin holds 2,500 gallons of water, utilizing 80 aqua blocks, each of which has a capacity of 32 gallons. This large volume ensures the system can handle all the water moving through the waterfalls and streams, maintaining balance and clarity.

Our team had to excavate carefully around existing underground lines—drainage pipes, gas lines, and pool equipment wiring—to ensure a perfect fit for this basin. We even lowered the pump vaults deeper into the ground so the pumps can sit at the bottom. This placement allows us to use every gallon of water efficiently, ensuring the pumps have a steady supply for smooth operation.

Once excavation was complete, we installed a protective fabric layer to shield the liner from damage, then laid the liner itself. After placing all the aqua blocks and backfilling, the basin was ready to support the next steps of construction. This groundwork sets the stage for the three waterfalls that will cascade over the basin, providing both visual appeal and the mechanical filtration that keeps the pond pristine.

The Waterfall Experience: Beauty and Function Combined

Three separate waterfalls will flow over the negative edge basin. These waterfalls add a soothing soundscape and a dynamic visual element to the backyard. The water will splash down into the basin, where it’s filtered and recirculated back to the top, creating a continuous, mesmerizing cycle.

The sound of flowing water does more than please the ears—it masks noise from nearby roads or neighbors, enhancing the feeling of a private sanctuary. Additionally, the movement of water helps oxygenate the pond, benefiting the fish and aquatic plants that live there.

Bridging Spaces: The Wooden Bridge and Pond Window

One of the most exciting features of this project is the wooden bridge that will span across the pond. This bridge isn’t just a crossing—it’s a destination. As you walk across, you’ll be able to peer into the pond through a specially designed pond window. This glass window creates an aquarium-like view, allowing you to see the koi swimming below the surface.

We’re utilizing the natural slope to integrate the window seamlessly into the pond’s design. This elevation difference also creates a dynamic flow of water, adding depth to the space and making the pond window a captivating focal point. From the bridge, visitors can continue to the swimming pool, back to the patio, or out into the lawn, ensuring the backyard feels open and connected.

Fire and Water: The Fountainscapes That Steal the Show

This project introduces an innovative twist to classic water features. We’re installing fountainscapes that combine fire and water in a way we haven’t done before. The setup includes an urn, a sphere, and several patio bowls, all designed to emit flames from their tops while water splashes around them.

Imagine walking through the backyard and encountering stunning fire bowls that dance with flickering flames above cascading water. This dramatic contrast creates an unforgettable ambiance, perfect for evening gatherings or quiet moments of reflection.

We’re also redesigning the walkway around this area to enhance the experience. As you approach from the patio, you’ll be greeted by this spectacular fountainscape, setting the tone for the rest of the backyard.

Bringing It All Together: A Backyard Like No Other

From the koi pond with its pond window to the wooden bridge and the fiery water fountains, this project is a masterclass in blending natural elements with creative design. The swimming pool, installed last year, anchors the space, while the new pond and features add layers of interest and function.

The pond window allows for a unique underwater viewing experience, making the fish feel like part of the landscape rather than hidden creatures. The negative edge pond keeps the water crystal clear, and the waterfalls add movement, sound, and oxygenation. The fire bowls provide warmth and visual drama, creating a space that is both relaxing and invigorating.

Walking through this backyard will feel like stepping into a carefully crafted outdoor living room, where every element invites interaction and enjoyment.

Why This Project Matters

Projects like these push the boundaries of what outdoor living spaces can be. They combine engineering, artistry, and a deep understanding of nature to create environments that enrich everyday life. Our goal is to build outdoor dreams that feel personal and timeless.

The integration of fire and water elements adds sensory richness, transforming the backyard into an immersive experience.
