At Turpin, we believe in revisiting our projects to see their development. Recently, we revisited a pond installation project that was completed in 2022 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Check out the unique features and collaborative efforts that went into transforming a backyard with a stunning and functional pond.
Expanding the Vision: From Small to Grand
Originally, the project scope was much smaller. However, the homeowner had the opportunity to participate in our annual Charity Pond Tour just three weeks before the project commenced. This tour allowed him to see various water features and inspired him to expand the pond’s size. By the end of the same day, we had a new plan that significantly increased the pond’s overall layout.
Creating a Floating Aquatics Cove
One of the homeowner’s primary interests was floating aquatics. Typically, managing these plants can be challenging due to skimming issues. To address this, we designed a dedicated Cove for the floating aquatics. This area, known as a dead zone, has minimal water movement, which helps keep the plants contained and the section clean.
Enhancing Koi Habitat with a Deep Third Shelf
The expanded pond features a third shelf that is 30 to 32 inches deep, ideal for housing koi. The homeowner had a prior interest in koi and previously maintained a small pond. The larger third shelf not only provides ample space for the koi to thrive but also includes a unique fish cave created with Driftwood, offering a safe haven for the fish.
Integrating Unique Design Elements
During the construction process, client collaboration played a vital role. The homeowner suggested incorporating a Boulder as a step into the pond, which we adjusted to ensure easy access. Additionally, the use of unique Driftwood pieces for the fish cave added a distinctive visual and functional element to the pond.
Landscape Installation: Adding the Finishing Touch
A significant aspect that sets our water feature projects apart is the landscape installation. For this project, the homeowner desired a sprawling area with unique plant specimens. We oversized the berm, creating ample plantable space for diverse landscaping, which will continue to develop and enhance the pond’s beauty over the years.
This revisited pond installation project in West Chester, PA, showcases the importance of client collaboration and innovative design in creating stunning water features. From expanding the pond’s scope to incorporating unique elements like the floating aquatics cove and fish cave, every detail was meticulously planned and executed. The result is a beautiful, functional, and evolving landscape that continues to bring joy to the homeowner.
