Stormwater Management to Protect
Your Property in West Chester, PA, and Throughout Chester County
Practical Solutions With a Natural Look and Feel
We welcome the rainfall, but if your property is not equipped with proper drainage and other stormwater management solutions, that rain can do more harm than good. When there's more water than the soil can absorb, it has to go somewhere, and it's important that your landscape is designed to direct that extra water away from your home's foundation, gardens, and more.
At Turpin Landscape Design Build, we include stormwater management solutions in every project to help you avoid property damage and ensure your landscape lasts for years. By taking this big-picture approach, we anticipate your needs during the design process and account for stormwater with rain gardens, swales, French drains, retaining walls, and more. These solutions are as beautiful as they are practical, and they blend into your landscape, quietly doing their job while contributing to your aesthetic.
With more than 20 years of experience in the West Chester, Pennsylvania, area, we bring a wealth of knowledge to every project, and we back that up with our Craftsmanship Promise. That includes our proactive approach to solve problems before they start and a commitment to educating you on your new landscape and what to expect.

Your Stormwater Management Experts
Whether you urgently need to add stormwater management solutions to your existing property or want to be sure you include them in your pool and landscape design and installation, Turpin Landscape Design Build can help. We work closely with you to determine the specific needs of your property and your aesthetic preferences before we develop customized solutions:
- Grading: Berms (mounds of dirt) can block water and redirect it toward the swales (shallow valleys), which allow water to flow away from your home and slow it down to encourage evaporation and/or soaking into the soil.
- Rain Gardens: These beautiful gardens store the stormwater with native plants that don't mind being waterlogged. The garden filters the water as it soaks back into the ground.
- French Drains: Used to prevent swampy areas in your yard, French drains consist of a pipe that collects water from a slope and directs it into a gravel-filled trench.
- Dry Creek Beds: If you have an area that collects a large amount of stormwater, a dry creek bed is an attractive solution. The stream is lined with plants and the bottom is covered with stones, which help prevent erosion while directing the water where you want it to go.
- Dry Wells: When properly placed away from your foundation, septic systems, pools, and ponds, dry wells can manage water run-off from the roof and other low-sediment run-off. A dry well is a pit covered with a filter cloth and filled with gravel. Within 48 hours after a storm, the water in the pit will have filtered back into the soil.
- Retaining Walls: By creating terraces and retaining walls, we can slow the flow of stormwater, giving it the opportunity to sink into the soil. These terraces can be beautifully landscaped with garden beds, trees, and more.
Many landscapes require a combination of these solutions to best manage stormwater runoff. We'll help you determine what's right for your property and your budget. Contact us to get started.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Custom Landscapes
Creating a great customer experience is as important to us as building beautiful landscapes. Over the years, we've streamlined our process to ensure a simple, hassle-free experience for you. View each step in our process below to learn more.
1. Get In Touch
This is where it all begins! Fill out the contact form on our website and give us some information about your project. You'll hear from us within one business day requesting any additional information that may be needed or to move forward with the next step in our process.
2. Initial Consultation
This is an opportunity for both of us to get to know each other better either on the phone or virtually. You'll go into detail about your needs and wants, to ensure we've got a good understanding of what you're looking for in your space so that we can present you with a ballpark price for your project.
3. Onsite Consultation
The Project Manager or Landscape Designer will be there, and we ask that all decision-makers be present. We’ll collect your consultation fee, which will be credited toward the design and/or construction. During this consultation we’ll take measurements, photos, and share material samples with you to help you get a better sense of what's possible. Throughout it all, we're here to guide you with expert advice and recommendations.
From there, we'll draw up your agreement and collect your deposit or design fee to secure your place on our schedule. For some projects, we'll start our design process right there on the spot!
4. Design & Materials
For larger projects and pools there is a more extensive design phase. There's a $1,500-5,000 design charge, depending upon the scope of the project and whether you'd like a 2D or 3D design. We'll have a virtual meeting to present your design plan which includes material samples. Design and material adjustments are made according to your feedback. We offer revisions, because we want to make sure the design is exactly what you're envisioning for your space. We’ll finalize your plans and draft your construction agreement. When you sign off on it and pay your construction deposit, we’ll secure your place on our calendar.
5. Project Kick-Off Meeting
You'll meet in person with the Project Manager and your crew leader, where we'll revisit the scope of your work and the fine details of your project. We'll mark everything out on the ground so you can get a sense of the layout in your space, and you'll have the opportunity to ask questions. This meeting usually occurs 2-4 weeks before construction.
6. Construction
Your Project Manager remains your point of contact throughout the construction phase. Our crew works hard to stick to the agreed upon schedule and budget, pending any change requests or weather conditions and other circumstances out of our control. We'll provide weekly updates on the status of the project and communicate proactively whenever something needs your attention.
7. Final Walkthrough
You'll take a final look at your new landscape with your Project Manager, and we'll show you how to properly care for and maintain your outdoor features. This is also when we'll collect your final payment.
