Step 1: Cutting and Chipping Bamboo Stalks
The first step in bamboo removal involves cutting down the stalks. Equip yourself with chainsaws and a chipper to handle the tall, dense bamboo. However, be warned: bamboo is notoriously difficult to chip. Its fibrous structure can wrap around the chipper drum and cause mechanical issues.
Before renting a chipper, discuss your plans with the rental provider. Let them know you’re chipping bamboo, so they can recommend a suitable machine. Once chipped, finding a disposal site for bamboo stalks can be tricky. Most mulching facilities won’t accept bamboo, but local composting sites might.
Step 2: Excavating Bamboo Roots
Removing bamboo stalks is just the beginning. Bamboo roots, also known as rhizomes, are the true culprits behind its invasive nature. Use an excavator bucket to dig out the roots, following them as far as they extend. This step ensures you eliminate the plant entirely and prevent regrowth.

Step 3: Installing a Plastic Barrier
To prevent bamboo from re-establishing itself, install a plastic barrier around the area. Use a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) roll at least 36 inches high. Bury the barrier deeply, leaving the top edge above ground. This forces bamboo roots to grow upward and stop, rather than sneaking under obstacles like concrete.
The barrier must encircle the bamboo completely, with no gaps. Overlapping the edges ensures a continuous shield that halts rhizome spread.

Despite its challenges, bamboo can serve as an elegant addition to your landscape when managed properly. If you choose to incorporate bamboo, ensure you use a 360-degree containment system like the plastic barrier described. This approach prevents it from invading nearby areas and keeps maintenance manageable.
